What to Expect After Liposuction

by Melinda Hawkins

If you want to feel more confident in your clothing and lose that stubborn fat around your abdomen, thighs, or upper arms, liposuction is a great option. Liposuction can help you achieve the enviable beach body you have always wanted and is much less invasive than other types of plastic surgery. If you are considering liposuction or even have an appointment scheduled, it is critical to understand what to expect. Here are a few of the things you can expect after your liposuction.

Right After the Procedure

Depending upon the type of liposuction, your surgeon will choose local or general anesthesia. Local or regional anesthesia means that only a certain portion of your body will be sedated. General anesthesia means you will be put under and asleep during the procedure. Either way, after the procedure is over, you will remain in a recovery room for several hours.

During recovery, you will be monitored to ensure there is not an adverse reaction to the procedure. Your incisions will not be completely closed, and your surgeon will insert drains into the incisions to help eliminate excess fluid that naturally builds during the procedure. You will also be fitted with compression garments.

These garments will help protect the incisions, promote healing, and reduce swelling. Once you are given the okay, a loved one can drive you home.

Expect Swelling, Bruising, and Discomfort

There will be some swelling, bruising, and discomfort after the procedure. Depending upon the level of discomfort you are experiencing, your surgeon will either recommend an over-the-counter or prescription pain reliever. Ice packs placed on the affected areas can help reduce swelling and help you also find relief from the pain.

Be Prepared to Take Care of Yourself

Finally, it is critical that you take it easy and relax for the first few hours after your procedure. Going to the pharmacy and picking up any prescribed medications, including pain relievers and antibiotics, can help eliminate an unnecessary trip. Also, make sure to pack the pantry and fridge with plenty of healthy snacks and easy-to-prepare meals.

Wait several hours before you take a shower and pay attention to the drains and incisions. If you notice any increasing pain, swelling, or redness, contact your surgeon right away. Rest when you need to, but also make sure to get up and walk around a few times during the day. This will help prevent blood clots and improve swelling.

If you are considering liposuction, knowing what to expect can help you plan accordingly. Contact your surgeon with any further questions.
