Hair Extensions Basics

by Melinda Hawkins

If you are like most women, you look on social media and see images of women with really long and thick hair and you want the same thing. One thing that you may not know about many women with long thick locks is that they have extensions. Extensions are one of the best ways for women to get their dream hair without actually having to spend years and years growing it out or wishing for something that you'll never have. The tricky thing about extensions though is that unless they are done right, people will be able to tell that not all of the hair on top of your head is yours.

Know Your Types of Extensions

The first thing that you should do when looking into hair extensions is research what kind you want to go with. The most popular types of extensions include:

Clip In Extensions: These extensions are removed every night before bed and before showering. They simply click into the head to add volume and length.

Sew In Extensions: These extensions are actually sewn into your natural hair which gives them a really natural look.

Glue In Extensions: Glue in extensions are another type of extension that are similar to the ones that are sewn in but instead they are glued into the hair. One thing people don't like about these is that they can sometimes leave a sticky residue on the scalp.

Braid In: Braid in extensions are a type of extension that a primarily used on women of color because it works better with their hair texture. During this process, a hair stylist will actually braid the extensions into the top of the hair to create a seamless look.

Get IT Color Matched

The next thing that you should do after you decide what kind of extensions you want to get is have them color matched with your natural hair. The best thing to do is actually have your hair dyed at the same time as you are having your extensions done to make sure the the color matches exactly as it should.

Have Them Blended

No matter what kind of extensions that you decide to go with, you should have them blended with your natural hair; this will help them look as natural as possible. When your hair stylist is blending your extensions, they will make layers in your hair and into the extensions so that they lay well and look as good as possible.
