2 Tips for Keeping Your Hair from Getting Split Ends

by Melinda Hawkins

While you may take pride in your hair and spend a lot of time styling it so that it looks just right, the one thing that you cannot seem to prevent is the frizzy appearance of split ends. If you tend to get them a lot, try using the following tips for keeping your hair from getting split ends.

1. Apply Oil to the Ends after Washing Your Hair

The main cause of split ends is that the shaft of each hair becomes dry and brittle. While you may use conditioner after every shampooing, it is usually not enough to smooth out the shaft and add moisture back into it. One way you can combat this problem is to apply oil to the ends of your hair after you have finished washing, conditioning, and rinsing your hair. Oils such as coconut or jojoba are excellent for this purpose. As you massage the oils into the ends, they not only smooth out the frizzies, but they also replenish some of the moisture lost from heat styling and environmental contaminants.

Ideally, after you have gently towel-dried your hair, place a small amount of oil into the palm of one hand, rub your hands together, and gingerly rub the oils into the ends. Let the oils soak into the hair for about 15 minutes before you start drying and styling.

2. Avoid Using Heated Styling Appliances on the Ends

Heat zaps the moisture out of your hair and leaves it brittle. Yet, in order to get a good style, you may rely on your hairdryer, curling iron, and straightener, all of which use heat. While the use of heated styling appliances may be unavoidable, try to avoid using them as much as possible on the ends. When curling or straightening your hair, stop just short of the ends to decrease the exposure. However, if you have to go all of the way to the end to gain your desired style, leave the appliance on the hair for about half of the time that you do on the rest of it. This will help minimize the impact of the heat.

Even when you take every precaution to keep your ends from splitting, it will still happen, making it necessary to have the ends trimmed off regularly.
